What is Spiral Dynamics?

 

In the 1970s a brilliant scientist, Dr Clare W Graves, uncovered 8 basic distinctive thinking values systems that exist in all people.  Each of these progressive thinking values systems are more complex than the previous one.

 

This science of 'values thinking systems' was most notably used by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu in the late 1980s and 1990's to help them with speeches and communication strategies during the Peace Process. Other well know companies ranging from Conoco Philips to Harley Davidson have used Spiral Dynamics to better understand their people dynamics and to enhance communication and effective marketing.

 

Have you ever wondered why some people in a team are often more focused on the rules than others and have ‘absolute’ opinions about how things should be done?  Whilst there are other people who just want to do the job in a way that makes the most profit and not worry too much about procedure and rules?  This is just one example of how different thinking systems that commonly show up in a team situation or indeed in every day life.  Certain people will gravitate towards specific thinking systems in any given environment or circumstance and distinctive patterns of human attitudes and behaviour can be observed and predicted for each thinking system.
